Jersey at Low Tide. An Epic Walk

Something few residents and even fewer visitors to Jersey experience is what it is like to explore the coast at Low Tide. This is not something to do lightly for the tides are notoriously treacherous for the unsuspecting and few off the island are aware that the difference between High and Low Tide on Jersey (up to 40 feet) is greater than almost anywhere else. When the sea is out it reveals a weird and disturbing landscape, both desolate and beautiful. I was lucky enough to be led there by Jersey born Dr Paul Chambers, author of Channel Island Marine molluscs: An Illustrated Guide. Fascinated since childhood by the coast this is his favourite place where the four elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water -sand, sky, sun and sea – battle it out in a relentless, primeval struggle.
